I have looked everywhere for support on this, but am coming up with nothing, so im turning to you all.

I recently took a very cool series of photos that i turned into a .gif file and uploaded it to my photo album in Smugmug, but the gif does not play. What am i missing here? Im sure its something stupid.

Thanks for any help you all can offer : )

Chris

As always, it's hard for us to give theoretical answers - much more likely to have a valid idea if we can see what you actually have done.

GIF's only animate in the original size, according to http://www.smugmug.com/help/upload-photos . Coud that be what you've run into?

GIFs like these are truly inspiring: http://fromme-toyou.tumblr.com/tagged/cinemagraph

What Malte said. Maybe you have 'largest size' in the gallery settings set to anything smaller than original. That would prevent the originals from showing.

Malte, these animated gifs are awesome - very creative!

As I found myself it could also be that originals are on, but the current viewing style, size of the original and monitor resolution result in SmugMug serving up a smaller than original viewing size. In the worst usecase you would have to bring it up in LightBox and click "O" to get animation. Sebastian, do you know if the smaller display copies are rendered without the animation feature or are they just prevented from animating somehow? If the only way to get the animation is toshow the original, it would be super awesome to be able to control what size is the default.

I've never seen a photo related application to the GIF file format, until now. The clever part is making it a still, with an animated part and to not make it a very short movie.

This is the .gif that i uploaded to smugmug.

Its only a 2.8Mb file and i think i set the size at around 1000 pixels wide x 600 high when i converted the stills into a .gif file.

The gallery settings are set to display the original picture. Im new to smugmug so im sure its something simple that i just havent figured out yet.

I just noticed that when i click on the thumbnail and the larger image is displayed to the right, if i click on "original" size then the .gif plays. How do i get the .gif to play when the thumbnail is clicked?

Thanks for the replies and assistance.

That setting is actually to allow the display of originals when they're requested, not to display them whenever possible.

    To my knowledge, not possible.

You could upload a smaller GIF (not in terms of size, but pixel dimensions). If the original file is small enough to be displayed next to the thumbnails in SmugMug style, we should serve up your animated original.

@Malte: I think the smaller display copies only contain one frame of the original animated gif and therefore are static.

Are you sure this is the case? If you upload something smaller than the "Small" size, Smugmug selects the Thumbnail to show - not the original size.
