i noticed a change in the format as to the parameters of a link when i post on forums to have my photos display.

on a few forums trying to use the links to the photo smug mug gives me wont work.

i traced it down to the few parts where the % sign is shown.

the first link as it comes from smug mug wont work.

the 2nd link with the gibberish with the % signs removed works fine. i removed parts of the link here so i can display the link without the photo coming up

what does that part m%26m%20 mean. thats the part i manually have to delete from the link on some sites inorder to post.

doesnt work:photography.smugmug.com/Other/COWBOYS-AND-COW-GIRLS/i-NLqp5gK/0/L/110430_m%26m%20photo-173-edit-edit-L.jpg

this works photography.smugmug.com/Other/COWBOYS-AND-COW-GIRLS/i-NLqp5gK/0/L/110430_photo-173-edit-edit-L.jpg

To improve your SEO for search engines, our new links contain your filename. Read more on it here:
    http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=196034

Your filename for the photo is the following:
    110430_M&M PHOTO-173-Edit-Edit.jpg
Some browsers automatically encode special characters in the address bar. So & may become %26 and a space may become %20. If you forum chokes on this, I'd recommend you bring it up with the moderators there since this encoding of special characters is a standard.
Here's a link that explains this in more detail:

But we can't expect several other forums to change because we use a site that adds something unusual to our file names.

So how do I know what to delete from the file name to make it work in other forums?

I've had trouble posting my photos in a few other places recently. I came to Dgrin hoping to read that it was a temporary glitch.

Show us exactly where? The forum link, please? The links should "just work" and if they don't, there may be a problem. We can help.

I'm sorry I can't remember all the places I've had this trouble.

Here's one place that I couldn't get the the picture to show up. I couldn't after a few tries and I gave up. Strangely, the photo is there now. It's in Post #9, and you can scroll down to see the communication about the photo not showing up.

The most recent place is a private forum for my creative team at ScrapMatters where I tried to post a scrapbook page from my smugmug. Because its a private forum, you won't be able to see it. But again, it's showing up now. Is Smugmug just being slow?

I also had trouble with a photo I tried to post on a blog of mine, and I fixed it by uploading the photo directly to the blog. I considered maybe it had something to do with using smart galleries? I'm using smart galleries a lot so I can dump all my photos into private password protected folders and then just show selected ones in smart galleries via keywords. And then I get links from those smart galleries to share on forums and my blogs. But maybe that is too complicated for sharing pics? I have checked that external linking is on. Is there something else I might be missing?

With the way the photos are showing up eventually, I'm wondering if smugmug is just being slow. Could that be? Not good, but better than not showing up at all I guess.

Okay, it happened again. I tried to get the Pokemon scrapbook page from HERE to show up in my blog post HERE. The picture that IS there on my blog I uploaded to the blog after it didn't work via smugmug URL. When I entered the URL in the dialogue box it said it was invalid (gave me a red X next to the URL box).

For your Pokemon image, it's a collected photo, and in the parent gallery for that photo, External Links are disabled, so that's why that particular image isn't showing when you try to embed it in a blog post. Go to that original gallery and turn External Links on in the gallery settings, and that will get the embedded image to display properly when you like it in a blog post.

The other image you posted earlier is displaying for me properly, and everything in those gallery settings seems fine to allow you to embed an image. It appears to be working normally as far as I can tell. It's always a good idea to check the External Links setting in the gallery you're embedding from (and if it's a collected photo, from that image's parent gallery as well). Maybe it wasn't initially displaying because of the External Links setting?

@mathjak107, The %20, %26 characters, etc shouldn't have any effect on the image being able to be displayed or not. That's just html for spaces and special characters, which aren't allowed in URLs. Note, with our new image links that do include the filename in the URL, everything after the last forward slash, before the .jpg is changeable, and even if you change it, as long as the image key part of the URL is correct, the URL will automatically redirect to the correct image. I'm not sure why a particular forum would puke on these characters in an image URL, as they're just standard html codes for special characters used in many URLs, but the filename part of the image URL is completely editable, so you can always change this if necessary. For what it's worth, I've embedded this code in other sites, and it seems to work without problems:

    <img src="http://mm-photography.smugmug.com/Other/COWBOYS-AND-COW-GIRLS/i-NLqp5gK/0/L/110430_m&m photo-173-edit-edit-L.jpg>

Also, I wonder what would happen if you try using the forum embed codes under Share > Get a Link > Embeddable Links? Does that work any better?

What forum system are you posting on? Most forum systems store everything in a database, but they also parse the information, so this may be where the problem is.

I see 15 photos in that thread. I also had another Hero checking and she's also seeing 15 photos.
How many are supposed to be there? Which one do you see missing? Maybe your browser is still loading the page? How long did you wait?
What browser version and operating system are you on?
If you refresh the page in your browser, does the missing one load then?
How are you connected to the internet?

Strange, but I see the % stuff in the last photo url and every photo loaded fine for me. What browser are you using? I wonder if that's not the issue. I know some browsers can choke on a thread with a lot of images.

Try taking one of those links and pasting it in a browser window by itself. If it doesn't come up there, it's probably more a browser issue than a SM issue.

Then it's probably just that forum software that has an issue.
