Odd (unwanted) cropping on upload.

I've got a really odd thing happening. Some images are getting cropped to a square (a little larger than a thumbnail) when my customer uploads the image. It only happens sometimes and I haven't been able to figure it out. I used a remote access to watch him upload the files and he's not doing anything odd. I had him email me a full version of the image test2.jpg to my computer. I logged into his account and uploaded it and I have the same problems.

I have an image - it's a small simple JPG - 395 x 282 px. (Attached test2.jpg)

I upload it to a private gallery and it's cropped to a 150 x150 px square. You can see it here.

It's happened to multiple images. Here's a couple more.

My first thought was some odd gallery setting, so I made a new gallery and uploaded the image - AND GOT THE SAME CROPPED IMAGE.

I uploaded other images into the folder and they are fine.

So...it's not caused by a single gallery...and it's not caused by a single image. Any ideas what's causing the odd crop when I upload?

Thanks,
Jane

If originals are not enabled in the gallery, then Smugmug will display the next largest standard format size that the image fills. If your image is that small, it could be that the 150x150 thumb is the largest standard format size that can be displayed. Try enabling originals in the gallery and/or uploading larger images. Smugmug will not display the original size if you don't enable originals.

I have other larger images in that same gallery. For example: http://reillys.smugmug.com/TransferingWebImages/Transfer/15963661_cSMkZ#1272596101_3Xq8TNC

The gallery was set to show XLarge (and that's the smallest available.) I set it to show Original, but that didn't make a difference.

It looks like your original image has to be at least 400px on the long side to be able to display the "Small" size in the normal gallery view.

Yes, it looks like your original is too small.
Can you try changing the thumbnail setting in the gallery settings to original instead of square? That may help. After doing so, use the Tools button > many photos > more > adjust thumbnails tool to change the thumbnails for the existing photos. Or you can upload the photo in question again to see if it's displaying better now.

    Thanks jfriend and rainforest.

I tested both ideas - I made the image 405 px across to see if just being over 400 would do it. That didn't make a difference.

But then I set my Thumbnails to be Orginal and regenerated the Thumbs and that seemed to do it - it fixed all the problem images - whether they were more or less than 400 px.

It seems as if the Thumbnails setting affects small "original" images.

My customer is new to Smugmug and I'm trying to get him to understand that he shouldn't be resizing images.

    Thanks for your help.
