BIF practice (6 pics)

I had an interesting weekend.
I have a friend with a 20D and he thought his camera may not be focusing
right. so he wanted to do a little side by side comparison to see of if was working.
We figured that all was well, (here's the interesting part) but my 300 with a
28-135is at F8, was almost as sharp as his 20D with a Canon 28-70 2.8 lens.

Now, I haven't used this lens since I bought the Tamron 18-200DI.
I think I'll be using it a bit more.

So today, I went to the river to practice some BIF's with the sky rats.
The first 3 were taken in aperture priority. The last 3 in Sports mode.
That sports mode did pretty well.

A note: I turned the i.s. off when I used the sport mode. I need to do that in
the future also.

Really nice job, Dave. I found I could only get away with IS when panning a slow bird. Your lens and camera did a fine job.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

    Thanks guys.

For me, I like the 5th one best.
I really like the body language that the bird has.

    Thanks ben.

The rest was just ugly grey sky, so I figured why not crop it tight.
    I think it works.

    Thanks again.

    Thanks.

We shot both wide open, and F8.
My wide open is F3.5, so he stopped down to that, and they were still pretty close.

We concluded that his pics were a bit sharper. but not by all that much.

These were at 1/250, F8, ISO 100 and are 100% crops
Focus spot on the bolt in the middle of the pic.
As for the color shift, I can't tell you which one is correct without going back to look.
