Looking forward to using the 7D. It is scheduled to arrive on Monday. Last few evenings at soccer games and golf matches has been very frustrating with the 50D shutter only firing some of the time. I am going to keep the 50D and maybe get it repaired later but I am ready for the upgrade.

    Andy,

Where did you order the 7D from? Did you order it with a kit lens or body only?

I am looking for a 7D (body only) new or even used if in like new condition, but all the regular trusted stores local or online are out of the 7D body only and I don't need a consumer kit lens.

Scott - Yep, I'm sure I will - I am getting excited. UPS says it arrived in town on Friday and they will deliver it to my day job on Monday.

Sam - I did not want the extra lens either but could not find it anywhere as a body only. About a month or so back there was a rebate but I had to wait for my IRS refund. Now the rebate is gone and I couldn't find a "body only" that wasn't outrageous. I ended up ordering the kit with 28-135 lens from Best Buy who had it $100 cheaper than B&H (my regular store).

Now I have to figure out what to do with the lens. I don't have one that covers that range except my original consumer lens a Sigma 18-200 3.5-6.3. Maybe I should just keep it for a vacation lens. I am hoping I can get my 50D rebuilt down the road as a backup.

I am so looking forward to it. Just got home from a day of shooting soccer where the shutter only fired about 60% of the time. Still got a bunch of pictures but missed a bunch of the peak action.

By the way - Does anyone know how the Canon 28-135 IS will compare to the Sigma 18-200 non-IS I already have? I hope it will be better!

The 7D body only is "out of stock" at B&H

Why are DSLR cameras only made in Japan ? !

The Canon 28-135 is a very nice lens, especially for its relatively low price. Don't know how it compares to the Sigma, but given the sigma has a 10X zoom factor (which is a lot) and the Canon is less than half that, and given this lens' reputation, I'd say the Canon will beat it hands down. It is a good vacation lens, I'd probably keep it if I were you.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I have camera and lens here at work and am chargering the battery so I can test them out when I get home. I didn't think to bring in a CF card today.

The 7D is an awesome camera, the only issue for me is that it's a cropped sensor. If the 5D mk 3 doesn't improve on the focusing I think I'll jump ship to Nikon on the next upgrade.

It is going back to Best Buy (for a power problem) but I did use it some last night at a school play and I felt like it did perform better in the lower light than the 50D. Plan is to use it at my son's golf tournament on Saturday and again at a ceremony on Sunday before returning it to the store.

    Worth a thought...

You'll note that I'm basically against moving from DX to FX. Realistically, few people actually need FX. Indeed, when I quiz people asking the "should I get a D3s/D3x/D700" question about why they want FX, most of them don't know. It's in some way vaguely better, but they can't define how it will improve their picture taking. If you can't define it, you don't need it. (Yet. You may some day.) We get so caught up in generalized absolutes (e.g. "bigger is better") that we start believing them without challenging them. Let me put it this way: if you haven't printed larger than 13x19" or shot at ISO 6400 lately, there's absolutely nothing wrong with DX. Even if you have done those things, FX isn't an automatic choice. I know many pros that shoot DX. I do it myself whenever I'm not doing landscape photography (24mp in the D3x is hard for a landscape photographer to pass over) or indoor sports (the D3s's high ISO capability is unmatched for indoor sports work).

From your mouth to Canon's ears!

As much as I agree with others that, honestly, full-frame is overkill for most people, ...once you get set on upgrading, I ain't gonna bother trying to convince anyone otherwise lol. It is certainly a thing of beauty! Unless you find yourself shooting in moderate daylight conditions 100% of the time, there is at least a place for BOTH a 7D and a 5D mk3 in any action shooter's camera bag...

nothing puts pixels on a target and keeps em in focus like a 7d. Even going to a 1d4 won't put as many pixels on the target

7D has approx 70% more than 1Dm4 (by area)

If John Thawley can photograph the American Le Mans Series with a collection of 40D's and sell those images commercially for several thousand PER IMAGE then I dare say there's nothing wrong with a crop sensor camera. ;)

Well I ended up paying more for the camera than I originally did and ordered one from Adorama. I am assuming they are in stock there but could not tell for sure. I opted for the 3 day shipping hopeing to get it in time for the soccer games this weekend.

This is why Amazon is my first choice for camera gear. Their website tells you exactly how many are in stock and you get an immediate purchase confirmation containing your delivery date. In this electronic age, it's inexcusable not to do this.

The reasons we are currently unable to do so are because we sell across a number of portals, including Amazon, buy.com amongst others, and because we do not charege a cc until an item actually ships.
Quite simply, our website isn't currently configured to be able to provide 100% accurate real-time inventory.

    However, we are currently investing $$$$ in this <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--> http://mediadesigner.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=1342916
