I am wanting to upgrade my desktop memory from 8 gb to 16 gb and don't even know where to start. Any suggestions? It a HP Pavilion Elite e9120.

I've always had good luck with New Egg or Amazon for memory purchases, though you may want to check if HP considers the memory to be a user replaceable part. Sometimes you can end up voiding the warranty if you install it yourself though you can always swap it back if the machine needs service.

Yeah. first be sure it can handle (hold) more memory. What does HP say about adding memory to that machine?

Not sure if it is the same, but I read the 9120F can handle 16Gb max - but usually machines with 8Gb are delivered with 4 x 2Gb populated. Means you just can't add another 8Gb, but have to exchange the old and get 4 x 4Gb modules instead.
To be sure open the chassis and check if all 4 banks are used.
