Canon 100-400mm L series lens issue

Hi! I've been MIA for ... I don't know a LONG time.

Anyway, I bought my Canon 100-400 lens last fall and it worked great on my road trip across the states and back, and worked all the way up to Feb. Then I get home from my trip to California and I'm having issues. As far as I know it's not been damaged. It was with me on the airplane and was carefully packed in my carry on for the flights. I haven't dropped it or anything...

but when I go to shoot with it and use either manual or auto focus it will take a couple of pictures and then flash 00 instead of shutter speed in the camera and refuses to shoot anymore. This does not happen with my other lenses (L series or cheapo) just the 100-400. I asked this on another board and members there urged me to come back here and ask. Hopefully I got the right section of the forum to ask. :dunno

    Might try cleaning the contacts

You mean it's 00 where the aperture should be? That's what happens when no lens is mounted to the camera. Yes, try cleaning the contacts, and, if what I described is true, then make sure the lens is fully mounted to the camera. Not sure what else it could be, though.

    yes I meant aperture! duh!

ne_nau.gif tried cleaning the contacts, but it's still giving me issues. I don't think that it isn't mounted properly, or it wouldn't work at all, right?

Set the aperture to f5.6 or f8 and, if your camera has it, use the DOF Preview button. If you get the same error message from the DOF Preview, it is a problem with the aperture communications from camera to lens. If no other lenses are showing the error and if contact cleaning doesn't help then it's time for the lens to be serviced.

Good idea Ziggy. It will work with the aperture at "00." In fact, the camera will shoot without a lens attached if you want. I have held a Pentax lens up to the open mount before and gotten photos with that.

I know this is an old thread, but I had a similar problem with this lens. I have done field repairs, so I'm not afraid to
take lenses/computers apart... I purchased a new lens mount and replaced the old one. It seems that the old mount
did not fit tightly enough, so there was play between camera/lens. Worked like a charm, but be a bit techie or hand
it over to a friend or pro. My mount cost me $33 and some time with correct tools and clean area. Just a thought.
