Beginner Book for 11 Year Old

Have some friends with an 11 YO son who has saved for 2 years to buy his own DSLR. He got it yesterday. When I see them, I work with him to help him learn photography (using my gear up to now).

But what he really needs is a good book to teach and guide him and let him explore on his own.

There are lots of good beginner books out there, BUT not many (any?) written for an 11 year old.

Anyone know a great book to help an 11 YO learn the basics and then go beyond?

Not sure if it really is an "11 year old" level, but John Hedgecoe has done a number of basic photography books. They are technical only to the point they have to be, but otherwise written in an easy to follow format. I am guessing your 11 year old will pick up some of the pointers, and then re-read it every year or so in future and gain something more each year. I say get a book that is "above" his level and let him stretch with it as he learns the camera.

Tom Ang has some great digital photography books as well. He spends a lot of time on learning how to see and capture great images within the camera, rather than on software and editing.

Can't tell from the preview if it is what you are looking for or not. Most of the kids&photography books are aimed at artsy-craftsy stuff. The above book looks more at the basics of photography. It appears to assume that most kids are going to have access to lower-end point-n-shoots. (A reasonable assumption, for the most part.)

Both Dgrin (http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/1085456_vcYmY) and I recommend: How to Photograph Your Life. It is kid/beginner friendly, focuses heavily on composition, and is just a fun (and quick!) read.

What kind of camera did he buy? I bought http://search.barnesandnoble.com/David-Buschs-Nikon-D3000-Guide-to-Digital-SLR-Photography/David-D-Busch/e/9781435456334/?itm=7&USRI=nikon+d3000. he has written these for several different cameras, and they are a very basic book to teach the settings and different uses of your specific camera. It's a great starting point.

I've read it, and it's basic and easy to understand.
