Why did SM break older category URLs?

Category and sub-category URLs like:

http://www.jimwallingford.com/Around%20Town
and
http://friend.smugmug.com/Sports/Force%20Spring%202010

that used to be the only way to link to these (before nicenames were introduced) have worked for years and now they are broken (the %20 now has to be a dash). Lots of users are seeing this in navbar links and category or sub-category links previously posted on other sites or sent out in email. Is this intentional to break these older links? If so, why?

Is this a bug that you intend to restore backward compatibility for?

To date, Smugmug has been very careful to retain backward compatibility for older link formats and that is to be applauded, but now that backward compatibility is broken for some links.

    I had to fix hundreds of these. Also all the old sub-cat numbers don't work so had to fix those also.

    The gallery niceName you now have to use in the urls is completely useless, doesn't help anything with all the abv. and shortening you have to do.

    We had to change the way we parse lots of URLs on the site, and that's why there's been a bit of wonkiness this week. We'll address this case that you bring up, John. I'm hopeful that we can just support %20 for - again. Stay tuned.

    We hope to have this reverted and fixed on the site today, will let you know when it's fixed.

    This should be reverted and fixed, and no longer an issue for folks. Sorry for the hassle!

    Anyone notice that all the old gallery links that include a photo number is now
    broken. No longer does a link take you directly to a photo in a gallery.

    Looks like I have to go thru all my galleries and find every link
    and fix them by adding the photo key. It also breaks every external
    blog/forum type posting.

    ... and the major problem is going thru each gallery trying to find the photo
    to get the key.

    You picked one that works. :D
    There are a bunch that don't have the photo key, this one does and works. I have to go thru every photo and check the link in the caption. I found about 15 yesterday, have not corrected yet. Each one I find, the link goes to the 1st in gallery with the key missing. Then it's a mater of looking for that photo in the gallery to find the complete link, photo key.
    Found all these in the two galleries. All have missing photo keys in caption link.

    Has this been fixed yet? I want to know that my links to direct photos in a gallery will all work... and I haven't been able to follow all this to understand why some of the gallery photo links were remaining intact, so I can't really test it myself.

    All known cases of breakage were fixed a while back.
