Have you checked out the Lonely Planet books at borders and barnes and noble and there used to be a series of books pertaining to the more obscure things about large cities......can't remember the name of the books ...but like lonely planet gets you to 99% of the regular touristy stuff these books got you to the off the beaten path stuff.....
If you're going to be around Chicago, I second the arboretum. I got many photos there just from 1 visit. Everything is in bloom now too, so it'd be a good spot, if you don't have allergies. Also, the west beach sand dunes right by the border in IN are amazing too. The dunes are much more fun on windy days, but you'd need a hooded windbreaker and a weather protected lens for that.
Had some time to check Barnes and Noble website and the series of travel guides i was thinking of was the Weird Series.....Weird Illinois, should give info on stuff that most tourist do not know about.....the off the beaten path stuff.....I am one that like to get off the beaten path and into dungeons Haunted buildings, catacombs and stuff if available.....
