During a routine room inspection this morning, the SNCO saw my camera and warned me to keep it locked up because people break in and steal things around here. One wouldnt think you would have that problem living on a Marine corps base, but apparently it happens, and i'll be living like this for the next 4 years... I always keep my camera inside my locker locked, but some a bit of added security wouldnt be so bad. after a quick search, i came across this

i'll definitely be getting a set of these soon

Oh I'd definitely do something to put a bit of extra security on it. Funny thing was I wouldn't trust any of the guys I when I was in so far as property/ol' ladies was concerned, but if some of us were out and someone not in the group looked at one of us sideways that one had about a 85% chance of catching a beating quick fast and in a hurry. Heck we weren't even safe amongst ourselves, it always felt as if something was going to go down at the drop of a hat. rolleyes1.gif

My opinion of the Marines just dropped. Once I was in group I had no worries of theft. Early on in regular army training we caught thief and tossed him of a second story balcony. Hence forth there no more missing items. :D

I personally think the Gary Fong gear guard is too pricey and has limited protection.

I did see this one that looked pretty good:

If a thief wants to steal something, they will find a way. I don't think it would take much more than a pair of glorified "scissors" to cut through that over priced cable anyway. It's only good to keep someone from walking off with your gear on spur of the moment. If it's locked in the same place all the time, they'll know and equip themselves appropriately to steal it. For your purpose, it's not worth the money. Find a better way.

    Zerodog,

He is in the marines. No way is he going to be able to have a gun safe in the barracks, or take it with him where ever he goes.

All security measures are a compromise, the idea is to find the best solution to your particular circumstances. He needs something small and portable that will deter thefts of opportunity.

Those cords look darn thin. A pair of $1.50 EMT scissors can cut that!

well, i've got my own cable i could use, its pretty thick and it should still work with it. i know theres no solution thats 100% secure, but for the most part, i'm not too worried about someone coming specifically after my gear, and if they do, i'm not gonna make it easy for them.

it's also nice to have peace of mind when i take my gear out somewhere and have to leave it in my car. I used to take my camera everywhere, then i stopped because i started getting paranoid, and when i do have to leave it in the car, i have walked back 3 or 4 times to double, triple check that i locked the doors. My trunk is pretty secure though. Theres no way in w/o the key.

I like that pacSafe thing too! any other security solutions?
