What is going on in 13? It is really interesting, and I can't figure out if you are looking into a porthole somewhere or if you have snooted your flash.
Well thanks Heather!! #13 is a porthole on the underside of the footbridge from # 04. It is actually 2 holes lined up in either side of the bridge supports. I was standing on a stair railing and my off camera strobe was by them. the thing that makes it confusing, and fun for me, is the flash spilling on the dirt under the bridge. I just noticed I went over the edge on my burn on 12, otherwise I like that one too! I think I'll redo that one! grrrr... (now replaced)

Was it cloudy?

Ha ha. Well the easy answer there is "because I can". If you don't have a camera that is capable of good quality 1600+ ISO, then you are really missing out. I do understand that not everyone can own one of the handful of bodies that excel at high iso, but for a wedding photog I would say it is probably the biggest technological advance since digital slrs.
It was definitely cloudy/overcast, and at the end it was pitch black dark. At the table by the water shot (12) I could barely get my lens to autofocus it was so dark. For most of these, other than the ones where they are walking, I was using off camera flash. My (typical) goal when flashing outside is to make it seem natuaral and unflashed. Not to say I always achieve that because I don't, but I am sensitive to the "over flashed" look. The key to the ballanced look is balancing flash and ambient, and to do that you need to either adjust your flash, and adjust your iso, and/or shutter or aperture. Even though shutter and aperture are great ways to add more ambient light, they also play a big part in other facets of the shot such as motion blur, depth of field, and focal plane. Since my images are mostly unaffected by my iso adjustment, I often choose to ride the iso setting as the ambient levels reduce, so that I can otherwise control the settings that have more dramatic effects on my work.
I hope that answers your question!

Well it wasn't black at that point but sun was officially down! These are all processed iin PS too. I'm not sure what you mean by a trick... A trick to what?
This is a rare occasion that I shot raw + jpg though, and here are a couple straight out of camera. The first is the original of #12 and the 2nd is one a couple frames after with the flash no firing so you can see how much the flash is doing to the image.

Both of these are f5, 1/30th, 1600 iso
