What does smugmug use to resize pictures?

For some reason, my digital frame is having hard time displaying pictures I download from Smugmug. I tried both owner save and album fetcher, and both methods lead to unplayable images in my digital frame. I just get a big question mark. The manufacturer states that it may not be able display some jpeg files, but does not specify the conditions, although it does support images up to 8000x6000 pixels (48 MegaPixel).

Anyway, the frame has no problem displaying the pictures if I run them through a 3rd party image modifier, such as FastStone or IrfanView and resize them.

Is it ImageMagick or GD or is Smugmug using something else?

Anyway, I am attaching the two files, one downloaded from Smugmug (Medium version of the original image) and the exact same file downloade, but has later been processed by FastStone, resized (at same size) and added a text for date display.

Can anyone analyze and see what could be causing the problem, not being able to display the picture from Smugmug's servers?

    Hi Andy,
I was going to send you the link to the private gallery, but it looks like no PM's. So I collected the picture to a public gallery: http://kerem.smugmug.com/Other/Uncategorized-yet/14204817_a8vwp#1232363204_97VqG-A-LB

    Hi Andy,
Thanks for pointing that out, actually it should have been XL, or whatever size SM calls the 1024pixel version. Either way, it was the exact same picture which I saved from my Smugmug, and then uploaded to FTP. It may have been modified while I was uploading to my FTP (bad FTP software). I checked the hash was different for some reason.

In either case, I gave it another try. I used the image from one of your links (getting the link directly from my gallery), and then I used my modified version, 5 pictures in my memory stick. (Original one, Modified one, and 3 other resizes of other pictures from SM) and I had the same result. 4 question marks, 1 viewable picture in thumbnail view of my frame.

    Hi Dave,
No, it is this Toshiba frame (Manufacturer's Link). Did you have similar problems with Sony frames before? It is really an excellent frame if you don't really need it's WiFi feature, which many users were disappointed with, due to frequent disconnects.

    Andy,
Here is what the frame's manual says:
Progressive JPEG and JPEG with YMCK color space are not supported.

    Are the resized JPEGs progressive?

Found the culprit. It is progressive jpeg. Smugmug is using progressive jpeg conversion to get those resized copies, and as stated above, frame is unable to display progressive jpeg files.
