City Arts Project

I've been selected to photograph a project between my city and an artist group. About twenty participants were selected from all walks of life: from artists to scientists, they were selected based on a nomination process to tell the story of the city in their own way. The series begins with six workshops and yesterday was the second one. My role is to document the workshops as well as the participants as they begin to create their "story" of the city over the summer. I will present my work in a show with images and a video piece I am also creating. The culmination of the project will take place at a city-wide arts festival in October.

The challenge at this point is to create images over a four-hour window of people talking to each other. As always, looking for action, reaction and interaction are the key.

This truly is my favorite kind of work, both for the subject matter and the subjects. Very little processing is needed. These are real people, telling real stories. It's such an honor for me to be a part of it!

lol, you beat me to it.

I'm loving the expressions you are capturing so far.
I know you just started, but my initial reaction was, there needs to be more explaining the project through your photos. Right now I don't really see a project, I see different people inteacting and possibly an art class? on the bottom shot.

Of course I know it's a start, and plenty more will be added that I"m sure will tie everything together beautifully.

I'm looking very forward to future posts on this.
As a start, great great expressions captured.

Congratulations Indiegirl! What an honor indeed.

Yay! Thanks. Yes, right now the workshops are not actually creating the final project but bringing together the collaborators in workshops to explore different themes and genres. There are six weeks of workshops followed by a summer of independent work by the participants. I can't wait to document the individual projects - it's going to be a fun summer.

This would be the sort of gig I would absolutely love. Good luck with the project.

Great start and congratulations! I've enjoyed following your work here and on your website and know the city made a great choice. Your ability to get in with a group, make them comfortable and capture real emotions and interactions without them mugging for the camera is great. I just assumed you were invisible yet interacting with the subject at the same time. Looking forward to following this topic.thumb.gif

    Week three.

Challenging myself to look at details, context and the things which capture the emerging stories.

I have to admit, I'll be happy when they move on to more active work next week. Love the talking, but am hungry for action!

Thanks so much, you made my day. I do try to be as invisible as possible.
