Tripod troubles......help!

I had a great tripod/heavy ball head (Manfrotto) that I had gotten for a song (a trade for some other items) that was stolen from my house. In trying to replace it, on a medium budget, I'm lost as to what to get. Tried the Flashpoint combo and it literally fell apart when I unpackaged it..back to the store. Then I ordered a Giottos ball head combo bor a bit more money and thought that would do the trick. When I place my 5DII and 70-210 on it , it moves a little ...no good. I've read articles on the importance of support and although can't afford the typical pro 'pods, I can get something in a moderate price range. So, should I keep the Giottos legs (VGR8265MC) and get a better ball head?, or send the whole thing back and go for a heavier combo, or just go for separates ? This is more confusing than buying lenses and bodies! My budget is about $500.
Any sure fire suggestions are appreciated. (the 70-210 is my largest lens)
Thanks!

    Hey
You reminded me to update my tripod review - see the thread below this one regarding the Feisol legs.

I'm a fan of Giottos legs -- they're at an excellent price/perfomrance point. You may want to look at a Markins ballhead; another good price performance point.

Manfrottos are about the for sure best bang for the buck, I think Giotto and Benro are pretty close.

After reading a bunch, I settled for the Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 tripod and the Manfrotto 054 Magnesium Ball Head with Q2 Quick Release. Should serve me well.
    Thanks for the hints...!

Looks like you made up your mind, but if you ever need something to prop up your house, or pull an engine out of a car, you might consider one of these.
