Is there a way to see ordinal(?) numbers of the photos in the gallery

I want to print an order form...so people can look at the gallery on-line and write down the numbers of the photos they like (yes, some people don't want to order on-line)....so i looked through gallery setting...it can show file name, but not the ordinal number ( 1-2-3 etc) ....is there a way to setup this feature?

thank you!

I would avoid this method of choosing photos if you do any hiding as the ordinal numbers will be different for you and your client. There's probably a few other scenarios where they might be different too.

i don't have any hidden photos... but you are right...how do i make sure photos are not mixed up and always stay in the same order?

Set a gallery sort order in gallery settings. If you're going to add photos to the gallery over time, you can configure it to sort by date uploaded so newly uploaded photos go at the end and won't mess with the ordinal values of pre-existing photos.

The only sure-fired way would be to log out so you see the exact same thing your customer would. But then you'd have to write down the file names to make sure you have the right files. It's why I always just tell my customer to give me the filenames or go over their selections with them on the phone or in person.

Samir, I don't see why you're objecting so much. If there are no hidden images, the images are going to be in exactly the same order and with exactly the same ordinals when logged in or out - there's no ambiguity here. If you add images to that gallery, you do have to select a sort order that will preserve the pre-existing ordinals and put the newly uploaded images at the end.

Oh, I'm not. It's just that there's holes in that workflow, so I was pointing out the ones I knew about and the ways around them. thumb.gif

FYI to anyone else reading the thread, the foolproof way to do this (independent of sort order or hidden images) is to use a numeric filename (e.g. Rowing-01546.JPG) and display filenames and use that as the unchanging ordinal for the image. That has the advantage that it works across your entire site, even in collected or virtual galleries, even if you change the sort order, even if you add photos, even if you manually arrange the gallery, etc...

So, for example, if you use the original filename (which usually has a numerical component), would that be what you're talking about? headscratch.gif

The original filename may or may not be sufficient for this - it depends upon your situation. If I shoot an event with multiple cameras, there can be overlap with the original filename (same numbers used on different cameras) and the original filename is not guaranteed to be unique over time because they are 4 digits of numbers and they repeat eventually. Might work fine for one event, but I personally make my filenames globally unique.

Great thinking! I didn't think about the multiple camera scenario. thumb.gif
