I know this should be an easy thing, but how on earth do I upload the the "verification file" so that I can access Google webmaster tools with my smugmug pages?

Here is what I need to do:

Recommended: Upload an HTML file to your server
You can use this option if you can upload new files to your site.
Instructions:
1. Download this HTML verification file. [googleb278f232d0b95027.html]
2. Upload the file to http://www.bluedaisyart.com/
3. Confirm successful upload by visiting http://www.bluedaisyart.com/googleb278f232d0b95027.html in your browser.
4. Click Verify below.
To stay verified, don't remove the HTML file, even after verification succeeds.

BUT, when I try to create a gallery and enter the html file, it has to have a "category."

Am I missing something?

    You can't put such a file on the server. What you can do is put an appropriate meta tag in the HEAD section of the advanced customization which is one of the other options Google supports. Find that option in the Google instructions, get the appropriate line and insert that in the HEAD section of the advanced customization. It will then appear in your Smugmug page and Google can verify that you control this site.

    The meta is:
    <meta name="google-site-verification" content="abcdef...." />

    The abcdef... is the code provided by Google.
