I've removed Java from my computers as it's a maintenance headache, a regular security vulnerability if you don't keep up with the maintenance and nothing I regularly use needs Java any more. I thought Smugmug was moving away from Java. I'm bummed to see a new tool released that again uses Java. Seems like a poor choice to me.

Yeah, even the latest version of Chrome blocks Java from running and requires the user give consent before allowing it to run.
Sorry John. This is a great testing tool, but it does require Java. We've already seen huge benefits from us having this tool, that the majority of our customers and visitors can use.

Just thought your life in support would be simpler if you didn't require modern browser, 3rd party cookies, flash AND Java. Java seems like the one you could get rid of as a requirement. The functionality it offers could be done without Java.

Can you show me a tool that does this, that doesn't require one of these?

I'm just saying that the same functionality could be written in flash (and perhaps even HTML5) rather than Java and that you guys should try to get rid of Java whenever possible.

We aren't experts in such technology - nor do we want to build our own, we have more important stuff to build So, we chose what's available, and widely used.

My point is that you should strive to get rid of your dependence on Java by trying to find solutions that don't require it. If you can't you can't, but it should be a last resort and I think it would serve you and your customers well if you could eventually get rid of any need for it.

we didnt write the line quality tool, it was a low effort high return solution to helping our customers. why do you have to find gloom and despair in everything? its quite exhausting.

If customer feedback exhausts you, then stop talking to customers. Jeesh.
I didn't know you got it from somewhere else. I'm merely suggesting something I thought would be helpful which was to ween yourselves off any Java-based tools and not require your customers to have it or maintain it. If there was a non-Java solution, that would be better. Sorry for trying to be helpful.
I have happily banned Java from my own computers and they are more secure and less work to maintain and I'm finding very little problem with that. With six computers to maintain, I'm happy to simplify the work of keeping them secure and up-to-date. Java was probably already on a trajectory to be irrelevant on the desktop, but with Oracle in charge of Java now, I expect that to happen even sooner. So, I thought you'd be better off with fewer tools based on Java rather than more and decided to say so.

John doesn't find the gloom and despair in everything. That's a very unfair statement. I think I've been worse at this than John. He's one of the most helpful, if not the most helpful non-SM "employee" you guys have. And while his points sometimes have a more personal slant, just as mine do, they are generally good for everyone.
sooooooooper easy. I just follow mac updates. And I have ZERO system issues with 7 macs in the house, including one that is for my 12-year old boy.
Do your Java updates come from Oracle or from Apple? Mine come from Oracle and they suck. It has nothing to do with Windows - it has everything to do with Sun/Oracle and how poorly they wrote their update code.
My Chrome updates are nearly 100% automatic and painless - again nothing to do with Windows - just a really good implementation from Google.
I must say I like this much better than speedtest, easier to use and get working. With how often I am traveling and in and out of hotels and varying Internet connection speeds I often use speedtest before attempting to upload images. Way cool. Only complaint is that the speedometer stops at 20Mbps .... I hit 32.
Read the tests, Samir. When you test to upload.smugmug.com we don't test packet loss. It's all right there in the test
I saw that after I posted and ran some tests from the location I'm at. On the full screen (non-shared version), it shows that as 'N/A'. That would probably be better shared than '100%'. I'm sure there's connections out there that will have 100% loss during diagnosis.

Only the speedtest will run without Java.

I had that problem - then switched to Macs in 2005 and never looked back. But that's another story

The dial stops there but the end result is recorded when it's higher than 20Mbps

I notice that these results are for "kbps". My result show as "Mbps". Why are they different?
