Cattle Egrets at Viera

I seem to have problems getting close to the Cattle Egrets at Viera, but was able to get these shots today.......

    These are wonderful Ira. I have a question for you. Why do you use such small apertures for these shots? Are you so close that you need the DOF in order to get acceptible sharpness of the whole bird? I'd LOVE to be able to get this close to some more "charismatic" critters.

    When using my Tamron 200-500mm lens, DOF is a concern, but more than that, that lens is sharpest at f11, so I try to shoot from f8 to f11 if I have enough light. In this case, I needed to shoot at f13 to try keeping from blowing the whites on this bird.
