Help: My pics can apparently be downloaded for free!

I dont understand why this feature is even on my Smugmug gallery. When you hover over the large photo within my gallery, I see the thumb up/down icons, and down below I see a folder icon, which gives me an option to SAVE PHOTO. This allows for download of full res image.

How can I get rid of this option?

If you allow access to the originals then they are available for download.
Set the largest display size to anything other than Original and the download option will disappear.

Also see ORIGINALS = a gateway to free photos, & right click protection is NOT PROTECTION.

Hi, and welcome to Dgrin. Much like a jeweler setting the bracelets in a locked display cabinet, we photographers need to protect our photos as well. There are few easy things you should be doing in your gallery settings.

1- set largest size to something OTHER than Original.
2- turn right click protection on

The above two things will stop the download icon from appearing. YOU will always see it when logged in (a convenience for you ).
    3- watermark your images

    More info is here: http://www.smugmug.com/help/image-protection

And of course, holler with questions we'll be here for you.

    Thanks it worked : )

Do I still need to watermark images even though the right click is disabled and the Save Photo option doesnt work? Just curious...

Yes. As noted in the thread I linked above, right click does not protect anything. In my opinion the feature should be named "right click message / warning", not "right click protection".

Does turning on the right click protection:
    1. Disable Google from finding the photo
    2. Doesn't work if the photo is linked (from any other website, not the smugmug)

Is there a web page with all the rules, gotchas...

    Thanks

Shouldn't affect google finding the photos for google image search.
If you externally link a right click protected photo, they won't be protected off of SmugMug.

Right click warnings only work in Smugmug galleries and they can be easily bypassed by anyone who knows how a web page works - they are a minor deterrent at best. They don't work on any other web sites as it is Smugmug code that makes them work.

There have been issues with right click warning impacting Google indexing in the past on Smugmug. I don't know if Smugmug has fixed that or not.

If you want your images protected from unauthorized use, then you need to limit the max viewable size in gallery settings (to something that good prints can't be made from) and set a semi-transparent watermark on them. You may also want to disable external linking if you aren't using it yourself.

But that's new within the previous couple months?

I see that the decision was made to remove this at some point in the future, but I never saw it in release notes.

I'd imagine that blocking right click protected images from google image search until just recently probably has prevented many images from being indexed in the past, and they don't just get indexed instantly when the block is removed.

The fact that externally linking right-click "protected" photos doesn't right click protect them when shown on other sites is not new. That protection is (and only has been) within smug, and as I've said many times, it's a poorly named feature. It doesn't protect anything. Unfortunately it appears that most people see the name and believe their photos are protected when that feature is used. Not true. (And for the record, I have no problem with the feature since I think it's a useful way to show a message to the viewer; I have a problem with the name of the feature since it appears that many smug customers believe they are protected by it.)

I was replying to Andy's comment that right click protection doesn't affect google image search results. I linked to a less than 2 month old post by Baldy that says that right click protection blocks those images completely from google image search. Baldy later posted that smugmug had decided to remove that block and would post when the block was removed. I never saw anything that said it was actually completed though.

So I don't agree with Andy's statement. If right click protected images have been kept out of google image search's index until sometime within the previous 2 months, it surely has had a huge effect on image search results. Smugmug MAY have made this change, but it will take a while for previously blocked images to work their way onto google image search. I think it's wrong for Andy to leave out that important piece off information.

Can someone confirm that smugmug did in fact make the change and when?
