Wow, Ira! That Purple Gallinule sure did pose for you, and you made the most of it! I'm glad to see this bird, because I just photographed a Gallinule, and first thought it was a Purple Gallinule, but it turned out to be a Common or Florida Gallinule. Now I can really see the difference. And I love the BG's--the colors are so soft, and fit perfectly with the bird. Seriously, the Purple Gallinule looks like he signed up for the Ira Runyan portrait studio special. Best, Pam

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

    Thank you,Pam.

By the way, the "bird nerds" it seems are always changing the names of our bird species. What was at one time referred to as the Common or Florida Gallinule is now called the Common Moorhen.

There is another bird here in Florida near Miami that looks like the Purple Gallinule that is called a Purple Swamphen, it has red legs and a red frontal shield where the frontal shield on the Purple Gallinule is a pale blue color. The Purple Swamphen was introduced to the Miami area from Eurasia as escapees from zoos following a hurricane in the 1990's, and there is some concern that it may spread to other areas of the state.
