Remove Field using API

I am writing a custom PHP plugin using SmugMug, and I am trying to remove the value in the Password and Password Hint settings. I can change it to anything that I want, but when I pass an empty value, I get a "Error 35: Invalid Signature" error. No matter what text setting I want to remove the value from I can't seem to do it using the API. Is there a setting or value that will remove the current text option's value?
