Book by Ross Lowell, review by ian408

Matters of Light & Depth was written with an emphasis on film and video production but that shouldn’t deter you from this wonderfully written book on the art of lighting.

Lowell is clearly a master craftsman and his discussion of subjects ranging from the basic Lights of Passage through Lighting By Numbers is easy to understand and apply right from the book. You’ll even find a set of practical applications at the end of the book.

What should you expect from reading this book? You’ll gain an understanding of studio lighting and how it applies to film making. An appreciation for tools of the lighting designer, like a meter and the various kinds of lights used in film production as well as the jargon used by lighting designers.

So with all this talk of Movies, what about studio photography? Well, all of this translates, albeit on a smaller scale, directly to photography. Follow the ideas presented and you too can learn to master the light.
