Sigma 500mm f/4.5

Bit the big bullet and bought a new lens. I got this primarily for wildlife, but may also use it for sports if I can get used to the non-existant field-of-view. Jeeze, it makes the 300 feel lika a WA. Anyway, to quickly test the focus, sharpness and resolution, I tacked up a piece of paper (one of my invoices) on a tree 22 feet from my D700 on a tripod and took a single shot. Holy moly! Here's a full crop. You can see the texture in the paper. f/6.3. I think I'll keep it.

Because I'm lazy. The tree was there. The tripod was there. All I had to do was stick in the thumbtack and stretch the tape. You give me way too much credit, Art. :D

Hope you get as much enjoyment from using it as I do mine (altho not a Sigma) :)

I think uncontrolled or less controlled tests are better tests. For a real world situation you don't have a well lit lab environment. You need to try that thing with some action or at least with some wildlife to see how it does for you.

I know, Art. It's humbling. Between the bodies and the lenses, I'm all out of excuses.

This makes me smile, and it's not even mine.

Nice job selecting a lens, I would say. Very impressive piece of equipment you have at your disposal now. But like you said, less room for excuses. thumb.gif

Yea really. Imagine glass like that for one of those gigapixel cameras, you could make perfectly crisp billboards of people's cellular structure.
