So they must be wasps.
I've been trying to get half decent shots of these rather different wasps for last month or so. The first is a digger wasp Ectemnius species about 13mm long out hunting. The second is a large Ichneumon wasp which I think is a male on the lookout for newly emerged females. Neither of them tend to stay anywhere for longer than about a second but I got lucky with both of them yesterday.
