File names in Links -No more Anonymous function

It used to be that when I needed a URL to link to an image in SmugMug, I would right click and select "Copy Image Location" (FireFox). Up until March, at least, I could also use the Smugmug "Get a Link" feature and get the same info.

This would give me a URL something like this....

http //newsy.smugmug.com/Other/New-Images-Public/DSC086692crbsmall/1224049363_L8Fni-M.jpg

If I wanted to hide my gallery info I could shorten it to....

http //www.smugmug.com/1224049363_L8Fni-M.jpg

And it would still display the image.

This past week, after a couple of months of no uploading, I've uploaded a number of images and have found that now the URL retains the true file name and I cannot shorten it and have it still link.

What's up? Was I fooling myself to begin with?

The URL format for new images changed recently. You have to do it differently now. You can still right click and you can still use Share, but manually manipulating the URL just follows some different rules now.

This still works and doesn't expose the gallery.

Smugmug just doesn't seem to understand that a lot of folks don't want
their gallery and path exposed. You do get a link like that for unlisted
galleries from "get a link" which is good.

I think that only works for older images. I think you need a different format for newly uploaded images.

if you want to construct a link, without using our get a link feature, or without making the gallery hideowner, this type of links should work http://photos.smugmug.com/1224049363_L8Fni-X2.jpg

But to get the "Image Key" type filename I have to use Unlisted. If I use Unlisted the gallery won't show up in the sub-gallery. And I want some of these galleries to be visible to relatives visiting the site so they can at least find it and then enter in the password I've provided them.

If I use "Hide Owner" for every gallery I may share a photo out of, I lose the info on the top of the page which allows non-computer literate relatives to back out and up the folder chain.

Mmmmm.... I may be moving more images over to a separate Flickr account.

You don't have to use unlisted. In the gallery URL when that image is displaying is the imageID and imageKey:

    http://friend.smugmug.com/Sports/Palo-Alto-Rowing-Club-2011/Champs-W-Ltwt-Double2/17041871_79RQr8#1290435272_nNhnVhW

from which you can construct the short version of the image URL:

    http://www.smugmug.com/photos/1290435272_nNhnVhW-L.jpg

even though this photo in the gallery has one of the new-fangled URLs:

    http://friend.smugmug.com/Sports/Palo-Alto-Rowing-Club-2011/Champs-W-Ltwt-Double2/i-nNhnVhW/0/L/Rowing-201105081236108188-L.jpg

I think what Newsy wants is not having to construct the short version because it's a pain in the rear. That's what I wanted too when I asked to opt out of nicenames.

It's really not a big deal once you know how. You take the gallery link and change the link to www.smugmug.com, remove all the nicename stuff in the middle including the # sign and add a size suffix and .jpg to the end.

If you really want a short version, you can use Smugmug's built-in link shortener at http://www.borealphoto.com/shorten/? See http://news.smugmug.com/2011/03/31/new-link-shortener-and-some-bug-fixes/ for more info.

That's too much. It's fine for one picture but it's a real pain to do with many.

The shorterner doesn't use my domain name but that's not the reason anyway. The reason is because I want my pictures a stable URL that doesn't change when a photo is moved to a different gallery or category. I know the old URL still works but that's not the point. I want to remove some subcategories but won't because the URL for each photo will change and drop in the SERP.

I have no problem shortening URL's for the occasional image that I infrequently post to a forum where I don't want to share my Smugmug galleries.

What I have a problem with is obtaining the Image Key "name" for the file. With recent uploads using the real name of the file, I can't simply shorten the URL like I used to be able to.

I'm snookered because of the other constraints with "Unlisted" and "Hide Owner". I don't want to use those options for various reasons including that I occasionally link to images in my "New Images" gallery that I want the world to see and would love to be able to use.

A work around is to set up an "anonymous" folder (Unlisted + Hide Owner) and copy & move a duplicate of the image into that folder. That's easy enough to do. Would be handy to have a "Copy to another Gallery" option.

Read my post #9 in this thread. It's easy to get the imageID and imageKey from the gallery URL (if in the Smugmug viewing style).

Created URL still exposes owners galleries
Maybe I'm missing something, but if I create a URL as described, using it will still expose the real URL for the image when used. By altering that, I can get to all public galleries, etc.

What I want is an easy way to create a copy of an image (with all EXIF and IPTC stripped off) in a private gallery with a private link readily at hand. I do this now in several steps, it would be so much easier with a "Copy to Gallery" option.

    Am I overlooking something?

I think you're not seeing everything in post #9. You start with this gallery URL on your site:

    http://friend.smugmug.com/Sports/Palo-Alto-Rowing-Club-2011/Champs-W-Ltwt-Double2/17041871_79RQr8#1290435272_nNhnVhW

You extract the imageID and imageKey from that and combine it with a generic domain to end up with this direct image link:

    http://www.smugmug.com/photos/1290435272_nNhnVhW-L.jpg

Which should have no connection whatsoever to your site, but still refers to the exact same image. If I don't understand what you're trying to do, then please explain in more detail what you're trying to accomplish.

    Thanks
What I am looking for is an easier way to make my images, and their URL's, more anonymous for use online. Currently I make a copy of the image, and place the copy in a gallery where the privacy settings are tighter than my other galleries. I often strip the metadata from the image also.

When I try the method (as I understand it) of constructing the URL, it goes like this:

    Original URL from gallery view:
    http://my.domain.com/Category/Gallery/12626999_jWXpp#908043999_HC78d

    I created:
    www.smugmug.com/photos/908043999_HC78d-L.jpg

In a browser, that URL redirects to:
    http://my.domain.com/photos/908043999_HC78d-L.jpg

Obviously, that URL can then be altered to view all public photos in my collection. Am I doing it wrong?

I see what you're saying. I guess this will only work if the image is in a gallery that is set for Hide Owner.

I know that http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/xxxx_yyyyy-L.jpg works and has always worked. I even use that form of URL for fetching images in the JFriend HTML5 slideshow so it's safe and reliable. I've had problems with the other way here so I'd personally stick with the tried and proven http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/xxxx_yyyyy-L.jpg form.

    no longer working for me
This technique was working fine for me for months. Today I can't get it to work.

If I create a URL for one of my photos and try to use it in a forum posting, it appears to be a broken link. If I type the same URL in a browser window, it works.

Is there something about html tags that make this no longer work?

the url I am using is: http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/1148413833_Uv5f2-L.jpg

Notice that clicking the link produces an error. Copy & pasting the url into browser works.

    Thanks for any help.
