Getting my work in publications

Not sure if this is the right section but im looking to get my name and work out for more people to see, ie....magazines. What would be the best way to do this? Should I contact the magazines or publications and ask them to look at my shots? If they want to see my work do I send them resized photos or full size? With my watermark or without? If they like it and would like to use it, do I ask for compensation in the form of money or is getting my photos out there enough for now?
Any tips on what to say or not say or ask for would be great.

Start with the photo editor of the publication. Find out who it is and try to get a phone number from the publication or the website - so you can call directly vs. sending an email. You'll want a portfolio of images ready - without a watermark. But you have to be honest about your work - it needs to be better than what is currently being published in the magazine. Otherwise, what do they need you for? Since you posted in the sports forum, I'll assume you want to get sports photos published. What sports? What magazines are you considering?

Also what is your goal in getting your work out for more people to see via the magazines? What end game are you aiming for?

Thats for the response's. I am looking to get my work into Atv racing magazine's, Dirwheels, Atv Action, Atv Insider etc...I am looking to get more people to see my work, get my name out there and of course make a little money as well. I have only been at this for a little over a year, still have much to learn, but when I look at photos from other photog's at the race's and in publications I think mine are just as good and in some case's better. I could be totally wrong about that though. In my opinion i think my color and exposure look good, I admit I still have much to learn especially in the composition department. I have done 3 races so far this year and am pleased with the amount of phos I have been selling.
I know I may have posted some of these already but here are a few. C&C please.

All the major 2-wheel motocross mags have info in them about submitting photos.

I bet the ATV mags would be the same, since some are owned by the same companies. You just have to look for the fine print. For example, in Motocross Action, the info is at the bottom of the last page. :D

    Nice shots, btw. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. As I said I am new at this, what should be included in a portfolio? How many photos? Something about me, my goals?

    Psssst, reread my post.

THEY, will tell you what they want, and how THEY want it.

THEY aren't asking for a portfolio.

THEY don't care about you, or your goals.

    It's that simple.

I do freelance work for RacerX any time I want to go shoot a race. I was lucky enough to get to know Davey Coombs from shooting pro races and going to the media days and getting involved in them. I started with a small magazine that covered 5 states and used it as a platform to reach RacerX. Everyone has their own way that they broke into the business, so there is no one way to do it. It is really hard though if you don't know anybody in the business.

Magazine editors are always getting probed by guys who want to be published. So, just shooting an email with some pics, probably isn't going to do you any good. I tried that several times with Transworld before I got in with RacerX and I never got a reply. Your best bet is to find a way to rub elbow's with editors. Your best way to find these folks is to get in at national races and seek them out in the media tent. Whatever you do, please don't do like so many photogs who want to be published do, and offer to give away your work. That's not cool and only helps ruin the photographic community.

BTW, you do have some good shots there.

Thanks, would I need a media pass to get into a media tent at nationals?

Well, technically you are supposed to have a pass to get into the tent, but there is generally not someone standing at the enterence.
