Dennis, I LOVE that first shot, with the great BG and wonderful detail in the bird, and such an action pose! I was just reading that in south Louisiana, in Acadiana, past generations of locals used to call this bird "Gros Bec," pronounced "Grow Beck," and considered them delicious fare. I sure would like to get a photo of one--you set the bar really high! Best, Pam

I do as well Ric. At times I will see them in the trees and able to capture them in an open area in the tree, but most of the times hidden in the branches. All it takes for you is some luck and being in the right place at the right time.

I like the first one a lot also. The background almost looks motion-blurred, as if the bird is riding the branch across the water...or something! Hah! Nice shots :)

Thanks very much Pam, in this pose of the bird they are looking for fish in the water and they always extend their necks in this way, and I guess this guy was hungry at the time. That is an interesting that the past locals found them a delicious fare, I don't think that I would even think of that in these times. I'd rather photograph them.

Pam, as I said to Ric that it really comes down to being in the right spot at the right time, and I'm happy that you thought that I set the bar really high on that image. FYI I waited in this spot for an hour as there was about 5 or 6 hanging around, and luck came my way with this one landing on that branch.

Thanks again for your comments and kind words.

Thanks for liking the first image, and it does have that sort of look for motion blur but the background sort fools the eyes a bit a guess.

Thanks Jeff. They do this alot when they are trying to catch fish and extend their necks when they are on a branch in the water.

I really like the first image - it looks like the branch and the bird are flying through the air.

Thanks Denise, you are the second person that said the same sort of thing about that with the first image.

Both are nice shots and I like the background in the first, but number two has my vote. Like the "toe" in the water and the reflection of the branch.

that I know but in your shot as someone else stated it look like it is doing about 50 mph the dirt on the feathers helps that look

Thanks Dan, and good to see that someone liked the second image in this set. I like that one as well for the same reasons, but tend to like the first one better as well.

I agree that it sure has that look that this bird is going at 50 MPH. I think that the background is giving the impression of speed and you are right having dirt on the breast feathers adds to this effect.
