MOV files play as a green screen

I just got a Nikon D3100. When I try to play the videos in windows media player, the sounds works but it just displays a green screen for a few seconds and then crashes. I have a codec to play MOV files. The MOV files from my Canon P&S work fine. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?

    have you tried QuickTime for Windows ?
    try the free version
    most often its enough to have it installed , so Windows uses the correct codec

    Well before I was using quicktime alternative to play mov files in windows media player. But for whatever reason the MOV files coming out of the Nikon can't be played. I've just installed the Nikon software that came with camera and they play fine in there. I guess I will stick with that for now.
