Can't speak to Nikon, but on a Canon my first choice outdoors is always the 135L, followed by the long end of the 24-70L 2.8.

I absolutely love the Canon EF 135mm, f2L USM on a FF body. Color and contrast, sharpness and DOF control are part of the reason but the bokeh is just amazing.

My favorite Nikon lenses for portraits so far:
    85mm 1.4G, 105mm 2.8 macro VR, 70-200mm VRII, 50mm 1.8G.
I would look into those first.

70-200 for sure. Inside I like the 24-70.

On a full-frame camera, I *love* an 85 prime, although a 35 prime is necessary any time the environment is important. On a crop sensor, a 50mm is *close* to 85mm, but unfortunately it's on the short side instead of the long side. I'd rather get a nice 85mm now for a crop sensor even though it's a tad "long", and then get a full-frame body later for the *perfect* 85mm portraiture focal length.

Of course, do keep in mind, that fashion photographers actually shoot with 200mm and 300mm primes, because super-telephoto is the best way to completely eliminate distortion. But only the big boys can afford to play with those kinds of toys... (Not me! ;-)
