Fire poi spinning

I bugged the crap out of a friend and performer, and finally convinced him to come out to my place for some fire poi portraiture. If you've ever seen fire poi photos (non pro), the majority are blurry messes that make it hard to see the *person* - that was certainly the case for anything he had in his galleries.

I wanted to get clear portrait shots of him, and include the fire and it's patterns.

This is what 4 hours at the bottom of my garden, late at night, getting eaten by mosquito's got us.





He also works with fire swords



and LED poi




Mostly, the same setup for all of these - a 7D with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 on a cheap tripod, pre-focused and anything from 1 - 6 second long exposures (ISO 100, f5.6 - f11 range)

I had a 580exII on a stand close to the edge of the frame on camera left, full CTO gel on it, triggered with a 25' ETTL cable on second curtain sync.

These are pretty sick, nice job. The only problem is after seeing the ones with fire, the LED one just doesn't look as cool by comparison.

Yeah, we didn't do too many of those in the end I was LOVING the fire too much!

I actually wanted to do this for the current Dgrin challenge a few days ago using a tungsten cable and a ball of rags or something but decided against it and went with a different idea. Now that I know what these things are called I'm totally going to buy a kit and learn how to do some of this stuff too.
