A friend of mine who is a promoter of lesbian events in NYC hired me to shoot the first annual LezVolley (beach volleyball) in Fire Island.

Conditions were ugly--gloomy, windy, cold and drizzly at times. I say this because it was my most difficult conditions in shooting to date.

This did not detract from the fun event though. I shot during the tournament and little bit of the after party. I wanted to captuer all aspects of the event, some sport (not my forte) but mostly the little moments, the fun, the energy of the event so those who went will want to come back next year and those who didn't will see the photos and want to come to next years event.

Here is are just a few of the shots of the event--it's a mixed bag of shots.

2, 4, 6 for me. There is great motion and energy in #2, wind in the hair shot, nice. #4 feels warm, like a fire on a cold day. And 6 just has awesome composition and the cowboy hat, the smile...yes. #6 is probably my favorite of all.

Like #2 with the dynamic feel to the parallel bodies running through the frame. #4 is bizarre with the lower body missing and being carried by the woman supporting her...ne_nau.gif

Definitely not a typical collection of sports pics, and I like that. Lots of great interaction. And yeah, what's the story on #4? headscratch.gif

    Thank you!
I wasn't sure how to approach the shoot so I tried to do what I do best and get the pj side of things when possible.

    Hey Damon,
I like your description of #4:)

It's funny how much we think alike sometimes, out of all the shots I took and I took many many shots for the all day event, #6 is my favorite out of all of them.

    Hi Rainbow.
It didn't look weird to me except for the shoes in the hand, but I notice Richard has the same thought as you.

All I saw when I shot it was the blonde hugging the brunette girl to her because it was very cold. The brunette huddled into to get warm. They are all standing up but the brunette has her shoes in hands (maybe that's where it's confusingheadscratch.gif)
I loved the possessive type hold.

Thank you Richard. I did really try to figure out how to best capture the event--yes it was about volleyball, but really it was about a good time, and that's what I wanted to get.

FYI to all--I took all beach shots w/ the E620 and my kit lensrolleyes1.gif.
There was no way in hell I was taking my 5d to the windy sandy beach, my e620 took a beating and needs a cleaning now, but I thought the two did great together specially considering the elements!
I used my 5d for the club shots.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

    Great series....

What I find most interesting is, the lesbian aspect really had no bearing on my interpretation of the shots you captured. Maybe as I get older, people are well, just people irrespective of orientation and you captured that well.
