Really a cute little guy and nice snaps.

One thing I might recommend to try on future attempts is to lower your angle of attack. In most all of the shots the camera is well above the subject and you are shooting down as witnessed by the amount of floor showing. While shooting from above has it merits for certain poses, getting to the same level as the subject (yup, you gotta get on your belly if he's on the floor) provides a whole different feel.

I'll let others chime in on the lighting.

    Hello,
great collection of photos. The only advice from me is to try to bounce the flash of a wall or a ceiling. The photos will then not look so flat - you will create a dimension with that.
But for a first timer - your work is great.

    Good work,
Can wait to see more work from you,

You are shooting with the camera pop-up flash.
It has enough power to be covered with a white handkie (One layer) in order to soften the light.
Your pictures will change and won't look so flat.
Be careful not to allow the flash to overheat doing this.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
