I just spent a few days in NYC after a 7 years absence. It gave me a chance to give my new Fuji X-100 a workout. I also took the D300 and the 18-200. I ended up using the Fuji for around 80% of my captures.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

More excellence.clap.gif I have been reading about that Fugi X-100. How would you assess it?

Thanks Dan. Im liking the Fuji more and more as I get used to it. The IQ and build are exceptional. It performs very well at higher ISOs. I'm comfortable using it up to 1600 and have gotten useable results at higher ISOs. It does better than my D300 at high ISOs. Its really a fun camera to use. When I was in B&H all the salespeople talked to me about it and the waiter at Peter Lugers asked if he could handle it.

The battery life ain't the greatest but the battery is small and light so its no hassle carrying a spare around. I've never needed more than one spare battery during a day's shooting. It does have a learning curve and its one of those cameras where you really need to read the manual. :cry

I can't believe that they placed a dedicated button for RAW on the camera. They should have let you customize that one. The function button can be customized but mine is set for ISO. When I want to use the ND filter I have to go to page two in the menu to access it. You need a high speed card or the write speeds can get in your way. The MF is almost unusable. If you shoot in macro mood (very good btw) you have to press the macro button for every exposure as it leaves macro mode once you take the picture. Hopefully the upcoming firmware release will address some of these issues.

In the end I love the camera and its a hell of a lot of fun to use.

I love your eye for street shots Harry.
#2 is just such a great capture, but I also like "rush hour" because it reminds me of a Richard Scarry book (author of children's books, my favorite when i was little), the book always shows a crowded scene w/ many things going on at once. Towards the end of my vieweing of this shot I saw the couple kissing in the right back corner--it's the little discoveries like that that draw me to shots like this. BTW this shot was taken about 6 blocks from work, I could have waved at you:)

I hope you got the bacon slices at Peter Luger's w/ the onion and steak tomatoes--ok I'm drooling now.

Thanks, it was a thrill being back on the NYC streets. I didn't realize how much I missed it.

As for those wonderful bacon slices

Superb series. The PP work is outstanding. I'm not into this kind of photography myself but I can certainly appreciate great stuff when I see it.thumb.gif

I always wanted to lie naked on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace. Cracker Barrel didn't take kindly to it.

Thanks very much Tom. I can't take much credit for the PP> The Fuji images need very little PP. I just did a B&W conversion with NIK's Silver Efex plug-in.

Really nice feel to these pictures, Harry. A couple have the creamy look of 35mm and you've done a good job on the Silver Efex front, too. I note you enjoyed the X100. Is it really a better noise handler than the D300 ? I have a D300, and am considering the Fuji.
Have to mention those bacon slices - they're something else.

    Regards,

    David.

Thanks David and the Fuji does much better at high ISOs than the D300. I shoot at 1600 with the Fuj with no qualms at all. I try not to take the D300 over 800. The Fuji is not quite as good as the D3 or D3s at high ISO but it is better than the D300.

Excellent set. Like #2, 3 & 4 especially. Also checked out the NY set with the focus on food. Will have to refer to that thread for eats next time I go back there.

Glad you enjoyed them. The food alone will always draw me back to NYC.

The pp on Private Eyes is simply stunning to me. The shadows and highlights and use of light/software gives the illusion you had a lot of lights around that shot. Very nice indeed...

And that bacon. Wow. Now if they'd just batter it then toss in the deep fryer with a side of cream gravy..... rolleyes1.gif

Thanks Scott. I had too much light during the trip as the temps were over 95 for our stay. :whew

I did minimal post work on the image as the Fuji images OOC are amazing. I merely used Nik's Silver Efex for the B&W conversion.
