quick question,

the pictures shown here are never assessed.
if they do not mean to say this is not good.
this is the African mentality enjoyable, experience of time?
if you learn nothing here?
or is it just to show off

Kind regards

Good question. I try to critque images when I feel I can be helpful and when I think the poster will welcome the feedback. There are some posters who are just want to share their images and some who want critque.

There's a lot to learn here and I have seen quite a few posters who images have improved markedly during their time here. If you want critque its best to post only one image. Its tough to critque a series of images.

If you see image that impress ask the poster questions about their technique and post processing. I have been participating on photography sites for about 10 years now. My photography has improved due to this participation. I've learned from the support & critques I've recieved as well as from viewing the images of skilled photographers.

Google translate doesn't always work that well rolleyes1.gifI asked my wife for some assistance:

    What I meant was,
we don't have to tear down every picture if we do not like it and we certainly don't have to follow 'the rules' every time, their has to be some space for artistic freedom and creativity, but
Why not share some usefull information or give eachother pointers or tips so we all can improve and learn something?
We are all doing the same thing here, I am sure you know things I don't and the other way around, why not spread our knowledge?
It's a big difference between assesments and giving a critical review, that was not at all what I meant.
I know what you mean basflt,15524779-Ti.gif I can add a few other to that list if you want.... why do you think I have joined Digital Grin?:D

I have already done a tutorial on wildlife photography. There is a ton of useful info in the tutorial section of Dgrin. Most of the forums have stickies with lots of good info. A lot of the info you a seeking is already here. You just have to do some digging of your own.

well , this is a small forum
its the users that do [not] reply
and if they do its short

i [think] i get your point , Eric
this is a FORUM [ discussing things ] not a "show your pic here site"
so , whats to discuss ?

    the photo's ?

IMO its fine now , but i agree with you , it could be better

and , not to offend you , .....
you are a great photographer ....
    start discussing , criticizing other people's photo's yourself !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just found it strange that I didn't see any discussions here, I thought it was 'not done' here

@basflt: I don't considder myself as a good photographer, I still have a lot to learn and I am always jalous of my wife's pics (witch se wrote herself mwink.gif (hey, don't shoot the translater!:ivar))

    They have been discussions before.

There are only two things that are not done (usually) here.

#1 having more than two picture threads on page 1.

    #2 being rude or discourteous

    Other than that anything goes.

I shoot allot of sports and the couple of times I have posted I have gotten some nice critique and tips on how to improve so I have learned from that.
I think this forum is great because of so many that are willing to advice others.

    This is a great post.
    1. I try very hard to discern whether the poster of a photo is really looking for serious critique before I offer it. I've been around DGrin long enough to have a pretty good aquaintance with a lot of regulars. I'm not shy about offerring unsolicited critique to those I know welcome it.

    2. I'm hesitant to critique an image from a "newish" member unless they clearly ask for it or are obviously an accomplished photographer. Otherwise, if I can't find something positive to say, I say nothing.

    3. I think DGrin is all about the advancement of photography, not necessarily about advanced photography.

    4. I wish everyone would imbed the exif data with their images. I learn so much from that data.

    This.

I don't post much because I am a very inexperienced shooter. When I do I am very much wanting criticism and tips to get better. There are so many incredible talensts around here. I lurk around because of the same reason - hoping to pick up some knowledge. I even more rarely comment on photos because I don't feel I have the credit to do so, unless it is something I may have knowledge of.

    Kind of a Catch 22.

    Not a Catch 22 at all thumb.gif
Perhaps you should ask lots of questions about photos you admire. Chances are, you're not the only one who could learn from the answer to your question.

I know the feeling because that's the way I felt when I first started participating in online photography forums.

The best way to learn is to post one of your images and ask for critiques. Also don't be shy about asking someone how they got a capture that they have posted.

When I first started my images weren't very good. Getting critiques from more experienced photographers was a big help to me.

This is by far my favorite section. Yes, I would like more info re: the technicality of how the picture was taken. I must say, I have learned that patience is key... understanding your subject is key.... and sometimes - glass does matter.

I love all the photos here. I wish I could have the patience to capture those twitchy birds. I wish I had the glass to capture those larger birds that I have had brief contact with.

I guess my only suggestion, as a novice photographer who has yet to post anything, perhaps you could let us know a bit more about your camera settings - how you achieved such great bokah, detail, etc.

Meanwhile, I envy your "captures" and look forward to your pics daily.

The other thing...especially for wildlife shooting would be discussion on setups/blinds/tools, etc. I don't know if these sort of learned things are secrets of the trade or not - but I've been tempted to post pictures of my setups to get input and tips from others?

I have been posting on this forum for a long time and all things stated in this post have happened here . If you want help you ask and 9 out of 10 times you get some . criticism of a photo is not always a good thing ,each of us like our own work, it is art so we look at it in our own way . But if you want some again ask and it will come. Still after you have shot birds for a long time you learn what is liked or what is a wow photo by 70% of folks and that is what you aim for .
    I have not broken Harry's 1st rule but #2 I have a time or 2 eek7.gif
A forum like this will help you learn but shooting and a few hands on classes well help you improve much better and posting will let you know .

When I first got to this forum, I thought I knew something.
Posted my first two pictures and found that I was mediocre composing and behind the lens.
With input from this forum, people who know about this trade and other professional photographers, my knowledge has improved and
my pictures have jumped from -010 to + 3. (My own assessment).
Critique some times is felt like having your ego stabbed, after the pain is gone, you see the LIGHT and appreciate the comment.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
