My wife, Jen, and I went on holiday to England and Scotland in June, 2011. We ventured first to the London Motorcycle Museum, Yorkshire Dales, West Highlands of Scotland, and then to Sussex. Jen was very understanding and patient as I stopped the car around every bend to take more pictures. I whittled down the photos to about 730 for the SmugMug gallery.
I reckon "The Shire" in Lord of the Rings was loosely based on the Yorkshire Dales.
Trying out the Lensbaby Composer:
There are great roads to ride:
Hardraw Force, again with the Lensbaby Composer:
West Burton:
The stone barns are many:
Buttertubs Pass and the photographer and his wife:
Then to Scotland and many castles.
Kilchurn
Stalker
Eilean Donan
Invergarry
Bolton (in North Yorkshire)
Mary Queen of Scots stayed here. Perhaps this is like 'General Washington slept here.'
Glenfinnan
We were told that this railway bridge was used in the movie Harry Potter. I have not seen the films so I didn't bother trying to get another shot.
We drove over Pass of the Cattle over to Applecross
The Isle of Skye in the distance
Postcard coves along the coast north of Applecross
And more castles
4,000 year old stone work with no tour coaches to be seen
There are telephone booths far from anywhere. We saw several in seemingly desolate areas.
We drove the length of the island in one day (570 miles; 10.5 hours) to get to Sussex. We found more castles.
Lewes
Before there were cameras, people drew images on the hillsides. The Long Man of Wilmington
The white cliffs of the southern coast
Wheat
Brighton Pavilion
Madame duck was in the moat around Arundel Castle
Arundel Castle gardens were beautiful
A proper drawbridge
Even the houses in the village outside the castle walls have their own little gardens
Our friend, Jerry, showing off his blue suede shoes
Looking down the Thames River in Teddington

Also, I am 85% sure they were being honest about the Harry Potter railway. Looks very similar, but it viewed at an angle, top-down in the movie.
