1st Jewlery Attempt

A friend of my wife needed a picture of a ring for ebay, so here is my 1st attempt. This is not as easy as I thought. We used some white paper to soften the bright side and a white reflecter to bring out some of the detail in the shadow. I tried to bring out the color of the stone in the center withsome back light.

After some cropping and a little saturation boost -

Let me know what you think.

BTW, I'll be leaving next Monday for a motorcycle trip following the Continental Divide. I hope to have some great scenery pics coming when I return.

    Jewelry
I think you did fine, Hutch. That second shot really shows the detail in the ring.
    It is a fine shot.

Have a good trip. I used to live in Denver, one crosses the continental divide to get to ski areas and stuff. A fun memory picture is to stand in front of a sign saying where you are (the continental divide at so many feet). May be cheesy, but they are good standard cheesy shots. Take lots of memory, physical, virtual, and your own, whatever that means.

It looks like a good shot for eBay, because it reveals detail. Aesthetically, the lighting might be a bit harsh, and the deeper color of the stone perhaps not brought out enough? It might be better to shoot with a narrow depth of field than to use PS to make the blur. Just some thoughts. Artificial lighting has to be a lot of work. I've seen little tent things you can buy that are mini light boxes, that might do well for just this kind of shooting.

    Jewelry hard
Its a good shot. And yes jewelry is hard. I did some blown glass pendants, and it was not easy. The articles had nothing but smooth, flowing rounded edges -- very three dimensional. Was hard to get that captured in only two dimenions. Also was hard to judge focus due to the lack of sharp edges. Fortunately my client was very happy. I think it could be better.

    Any advice would be appreciated:

BTW, how do I put a link to one of my smugmug pictures into this post?

Well, you have to have linking enabled for the gallery. Then right-click on the photo you want and hit "properties", then highlight the url (just triple-click it to get the whole thing easily) and hit ctrl-c to copy the text. Back in your message, click on the "insert image" icon (looks like a mountain) and hit ctrl-V to paste the url in.

Piece of cake, I would have done it for you but you have linking turned off in that gallery.

Linking was on, but right-click protection was also on. Now protection is off, and I was able to get this:

Seems to me one hard part about jewelry is the very shallow depth of field one gets from the high-zoom you need for such small objects, coupled with the short focus distance to the object. DOF can get below an inch if you aren't careful.

    Nope

I think those directions only work on Windows. I don't see all those icons above the text entry box, such as "guided mode", bold, italic, nor that yellow box talked about. I'm on Linux at work, using Mozilla 1.6. At home on Mac OS 10.3.4 using Safari.

Could it be I don't have the right accout setup, such as guided mode, or whatever? I have found that using a Mac/Safari on text entry can sometimes be stupid slow. Echo of keystrokes takes forever. Always wondered if it was all those animated icons, so I turned off as many features as I could. I use "Basic editor - a simple text box" option.

Your last is probably the explanation. I use Firebird on a Windows box. Patch uses Safari on a Mac - we both see the same thing.

Just grab the image URL that ends in .jpg and add to one end and to the other end.
