Experimenting

I saw a photo in a magazine that was rendered in black and
white only by Threshold layer in Photoshop. It was an interesting effect,
and seemed dead-simple.
It isn't. I tried doing this on dozens of photos without a
keeper. The resulting mass of black area obscured all the
detail.
Finally, I tried it on this one. Watcha think?

If you have Photoshop, it's as simple as creating an adjustment layer
with Threshold (one of the drop-downs) and moving the single slider
until the desired effect is reached.
The real trick is finding a photo where it works. You need something
with distinct edges of your subject and solid, but light-colored background.
This one worked out, but several others I tried since posting the first
shot haven't. I suppose there are tricks and techniques, but I don't
know them. I just experiment.
