I mean I know the difference, but why both?

Remember that SM considers downloads as "prints". That's why they used the printmarks not the watermarks.

Can the customer see a preview of the printmarked photo before they buy it? I'm trying to see how my newly created printmarks will work on a sample photo and can't see it myself.

I'm not aware of a printmark preview option outside of the crop tool in the shopping cart, but that's not available for digital downloads.
Unless I'm missing something, a printmark preview may be a suggestion for a future version of printmarks. You could add a suggestion to our feedback pages:

Throw one in the cart and go to the crop adjust page. Right click image and pick "view background image".

You will see the non-cropped version which can be saved and emailed or shown to customers.

While I applaud and appreciate the new printmark feature I would like to see an even more robust set of option regarding printmarks for digital downloads and printed images. When pricing digital downloads there is an option to set a different price level for printmarked versus non-printmarked images. Could this be extended to the pricing for printed products also?...instead of the current proof delay to eliminate the printmark on already ordered items.
Additionally this idea could be extended to watermarks. Therefore, one could make two price levels for printmark vs non-printmarked and watermarked versus non watermarked images. ...and one could set the options on a per gallery basis in the gallery settings. I'm just thinking of ways to give all image purchasing customers more options and an easier ui for us.
