Kingfisher huntin’ disaster
The DW and I went out Saturday to try to capture one of these elusive critters. I thought,
lets try the blind, so that morning I opened it and managed to get it twisted back in one try!
Great, no problem. :clapAfter a long walk around to the other side of the lake we set up opposite
the branch we’d seen one last week. No luck, but did get a couple shots of GBH walking in and
a pair of wood ducks swan by. They were out there a ways. Not the greatest but my
first shots of woodies.
.
Late in the afternoon we decided to try another spot. Pack up and move there quickly.:rofl
I struggled with that $%^%@%$ blind for an hour and a half trying to close it :cryand then noticed
the sun was about two fingers above the horizon, ~20 minutes till dark. Not a good sign.:uhoh We
decided to carry the blind, five foot diameter, back as is. Glad I didn’t try this on my mountain
bike like I was thinking earlier. Half way back through the woods part (about quarter mile) I spotted
some enormous puffballs and just had to get some shots.:D Of course, stopping ate into the
little light we had left. But hey, a photo op.:rofl
.
We made it out to the paved bike path and was half way back to car when I noticed my keys were
missing, duh!:dunnoIt was dark by then and only a sliver of a moon wasn’t helping. We continued to the
car and the only flashlight had dead batteries.:cry DW had her keys.:lust Called my daughter and she
delivered a couple of flashlights. So back on the trail we went.
Ever walk through the woods with a flashlight trying to find something? Almost impossible. Luckily
I thought, we had paralleled the water although in a bit and a couple of the big puffballs were white so I
thought they’d stand out like sore thumbs. Nah, not so lucky. After about a 100 yards bingo, I spotted
one. I looked around and found the last one I shot and THERE THEY WERE.
If I'd only chimped I would have seen them in the last
pic.:rofl I was pretty sure thats where they were though.
Lesson learned, never use your keys in a shot for scale.
The puffballs were big and I needed something to show
size.
Boy was that an exhausting day. And still had the
Cards/SD ballgame to watch at 10. Don’t ask what
time I got up this morning.

Thos puffballs are pretty cool... hey look, some guy lost his keys...
but just couldn't figure it out.
The biggest puffballs were about 10 inches tall.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Believe me, it's a %&$# to get back to that 2 foot dia. if ya don't twist it just right ... or left.

Thanks Steve. Hope they don't migrate outa here too soon. Wonder if they all head for Florida? Might have to warn them.
Thanks Harry, I remember years ago we used to kick then little ones and watch the green "smoke" fly. Ya'd break your foot on these.
I'll get the little devil yet. They sound like they're laughing at you as they fly by.
Thanks Ben, but it might take a couple weeks to recover.
