Pics needing a Broken Rule, though Shot by Breaking Rules

I'm stumped. I can come up with a list of rules, and I break them frequently, instinctually. But I cannot come up with a photo idea that is specifically meant to show a broken rule. Also, it's hard for me to imagine coming up with a title that would hint at the broken rule, without specifying what rule was broken.

I guess that is why we call them Challenges. :scratch

For sunrise this morning, I snuck up to the top of a tall church bell tower, probably breaking several rules in the process since it was without permission. It was beautiful, and I took over 3,000 individual pics (did a time lapse with one camera and a bunch of stills with another. I'm loving some of the shots, but I cannot stretch any of them to fit the challenge.

Maybe some of you can see a broken rule here?

(Does cropping to an unusual aspect ratio count as breaking a rule?)

2.

(I suppose this one breaks the rule of using a small aperture and wider dof for landscape shots?)

Wouldn't take much cropping to put the horizon dead-center. That's generally breaking the rules.

Hey, that's a good idea, then I could call it something like "Centered by My Horizon." Or would that be too obvious?

    They are very nice images.

Did you have any rules (to break) in mind when you took them?

No. Was only thinking about silly little trespassing rules.

These are beautiful shots - I think you'd have to break rules in post-processing - use the PS ruler to make the horizon angle oddly. Don't know if pp counts as breaking a rule of photography.

By the way, is #1 done with HDR software, or through PS, or did you manually do exposure blending? That is, assuming it is multiple exposures. It just looked like it to me.

#1 is three 5-shot bracketed shots merged in Photomatix and then stitched in PS.

    Only if you get caught!
You obviously climb a tower! Y/N? If so - the only rule you broke was squilling on yourself or revealing the evidence! Sometimes looking for that different prespective may invoke a little risk, but I find the results well worth it.

As usual - inspired to see your part of the country! Can't be of help though on rule breaking beyond what's been suggested. GP

Both are beautiful (as usual) photos. No rules other than horizon come to mind. Oh and the rule to avoid creating excessive jealousy among forum participants.

15524779-Ti.gifBoth shots are great! To center the horizon, you might try stretching the sky rather than cropping - the bottom part of both shots are very eye pleasing compositionally & I'd hate to see any of that chopped off. I am very drawn to the toy boat-like quality of the second, with the added touch of the bird - stunning!

15524779-Ti.gif Both great shots as always. If you can get the horizon centered in one of these - in a way that retains the essence of the image - I'd go with it.

Thought hard about this and took a photo last night with the Challenge in mind, as opposed to trying to finding a way to make a photo fit.

The broken rules here are easy, Do Not Center Your Horizon and Do Not Shoot Into the Sun.

    What do you think?

Gorgeous! You're definitely breaking some rules here and have a fine contender for the Challenge. thumb.gif

Have you tried to crop the image so that the sun is horizontally centered? I tried viewing your photo that way by moving the browser window around and it looks like that might have some potential. It really shows off those kids running around in the foreground when you view it that way. Give it a shot and see what you think.
