Spot metering: AE lock isn't working

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question, and I feel dumb even asking. However, I cannot figure out how to get my AE lock to work for spot metering. It's driving me crazy lol. I have a T2i and I've read the manual but it's not working like it says it should. I'm using manual mode. I press the shutter button halfway and then I press the AE lock but the star doesn't show up in the viewfinder showing the exposure has been locked (and for sure the exposure hasn't been locked). What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

ETA: Ok, I found out that even though I changed it to spot metering it keeps staying in evaluative. What am I doing wrong? Why won't it change? I feel so dumb that I don't know this. Thanks!!

I finally got it to change to spot metering and now the AE lock still won't work. And I have no clue why it took 4 tries to change it to spot metering.

I figured it out - it doesn't work in manual.

"AE Lock" stands for "Auto-Exposure Lock". There is no auto-exposure in manual mode.
