Lightroom and Smugmug Comments

Is there anyway in Lightroom to filter or create a smart collection based on if the photo has (or doesn't have) a comment posted on Smugmug? I uploaded a private gallery, and the person has gone thru and left comments on the photos she wants published, and I want to delete from Smugmug all the photos that have no comments and then set the gallery to public for sharing. If there is a way to filter or create a smart gallery in Lightroom, then I should be able automate this thru the Publish module, right?

    Hi JC,

Unfortunately there isn't two way communication with SmugMug and LR like this. Your images in LR are not marked or tagged in any way with Comments or anything else from SmugMug.

It may be easiest to create an Event on SmugMug and then select all the commented on images as favorites in the Event.

    http://www.smugmug.com/help/event-marketing

You can do this yourself, you do not need to show the event to your client. That will put all the favorites in one gallery so you can easily see them in one place all together. You would then need to compare that favorites gallery to your LR Catalog. You can then tag all the images you need to keep in LR and remove the rest from your gallery in LR. Republish the gallery in LR and the images you removed will also be removed from your SmugMug site.

There are probably other ways to do the same thing but this is the easiest I can think of.

Nick, I have to disagree with you, LR will pull down comments from SmugMug. While the event-marketing feature is better designed for the task LR does have the capability to retrieve comments. I have not been able to find a way to filter on the images containing comments though.

The way I retrieve the comments is in the Publish window/palette select the collection you are looking to gather the comments from. Then right click on the item and select Publish now... even if you have not made any changes it will retrieve the comments. The right hand palette under keyboarding and metadata will show Comments as either No Comments or X Comments. (You can also click the refresh icon on the Comment section but I that is one image at a time I believe.)

You could then at least browse the comments while offline and perhaps more quickly then online.

The problem with this approach is that I had a batch of similar photos - in thumbnail resolution size it was difficult to see the differences. All I needed was to know if the photo had a comment or not.

As Brad noted, LR DOES have the ability to bring in Smugmug comments. I just need a way to filter in Lightroom to show only those photos with comments.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find a way to filter to images that only contain comments. My galleries have been small enough that I just go to Grid view in Library and use the arrows to navigate through the grid looking for the comment section of the palette to change.

If LR updates with comments, where does it store them? How would you see a SM comment when looking in LR? I have also seen it say it is retrieving comments but I've never been sure how its attaching them to the photos in LR.

It saves them under 'Comments' but it doesn't seem to be doing it anymore.

It's working for me, see attached. All I did was comment on the photo and "publish now" on the gallery.
