Sony Nex 3
I bought a Nex 3 about a month ago, but I really haven't had a good chance to try it out.
I bought it from Best Buy also with the kit 18-55 and the pancake 16mm lenses.
So far I have been underwhelmed.
I remember using my Sony 717 and always thinking the colors were just a bit ... plastic looking.
Reds a bit to red and greens a bit to green.
I have an adaptor to try a few Canon FD lenses. The FD lens allows me to set an aperture, the adaptor that
I bought for the EOS lenses is also a "dead" adaptor, and setting the aperture isn't possible.
After trying a few of my older FD consumer grade lenses, I realize that this isn't going to give me great results either.
The older glass that I have doesn't have the coatings on them that todays lenses have, and therefore give me a lot of C.A.
So today I threw another big chunk of cash at it by buying the 18-200 E mount lens.
I guess we'll see how that does.
A few shots from the camera.
This was at dusk in the shade using a Vivitar 70-210 Canon FD mount lens. Iso 1600, 1/100, f5.6 shot in B&W.
Once again, making this camera work hard. This is with the kit lens at 55mm, iso 3200, 1/20, f5.6
These are the colors that make me cringe.
So after this, I went to the local camera store to check out some used FD lenses.
I ended up buying a Vivitar 70-210, but a different one from the one I had.
It has less C.A., and can give me a better chance at getting the shot.
Stella was in the shade, 1/125, f8, iso 1600, and a good bit of post work, some by my own fault for overexposing the shot.
The last shot gives me some hope. with the E mount 18-200 with OSS, I'm hoping that I can tame the colors
a bit and really like this camera.
Right now it a $1300 experiment that isn't working out all that great.

It expensive, but I think it's worth it.
Auto focus isn't real fast, but OK, the OSS works well.
If I had it do over, I'd buy the camera with the 16mm pancake lens, then buy the 18-200.
I wouldn't have bought the 18-55 lens.
Now that I have the 18-200, the 18-55 probably won't see the camera much, if at all.
Made a very quick stop at the zoo where my Niece works and took a few shots.
It even works pretty well as a macro.
And one more from the the town where my wife works.

Looks to be very sharp indeed.

I don't like shooting in RAW mode, but right now I don't have a choice.
The last few times out, I have shot in RAW + JPG.
I've tried to get the JPG's to look more like the RAW's, but I haven't been able to do it yet.
The weather and my work hours have made it tough to get a good run through on this camera.
Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll be able to get a good feel for this camera and have some good shots to post.
Thanks for looking guys.

I still haven't had a real good run with this camera, but I have a few newer shots that I think came out ok.
The new Nex 5N is now out, and the Nex 7 ships some time mid 4th quarter.
The Nex 7 looks to be a good camera, but it ain't cheap at $1200 without a lens.
Reading the reviews, I do have a lust for the 7.
Anyways, a few shots.
Using the 18-200 lens, I cropped these shots for some up close portraits.
This shot ...
is a crop from this one. I think it held up well.
Another up close of an odd bug.
Iso 3200
Last shot, this has a bit of "extra" processing done to it.
Strange things come out of the corn fields in Iowa.
Thanks for looking.

I counted at least 4 dgrinners in that DPR thread. Ouch, we did need dgrin
My first post on Dpreview was 07-11-1999 about using a Sony FD-88. The FD stands for "Floppy Disk"
I think when Dgrin was just starting, Andy was still using a Sony 717, and was very active on Dpreview.
I remember reading his thread telling about a new forum.
I think Andy and Harry were still hanging around the New York subways when Dave's thread came out.
Thanks for reminding me how much older I am. (not mature, just older)
