Confused by Categories

Hi, I'm new to Smugmug and the forum. Been playing with my new account all weekend (it's late afternoon Sunday here in Australia).

I'm getting frustrated by the category thing. Somehow I keep ending up with categories inside of categories. I have no idea how or why.

I want to be able to create categories that are main categories and then later create sub-categories. Any clues why this is happening please?

Sorry to hear. Can you include a link to your account so we could take a look?

I'm not sure what you mean by categories within categories. When I click to a gallery on your site I am taken to the gallery. The breadcrumb shows the name of the category and the name of the gallery. In many of the galleries on your site, the gallery name is the same as the category name. Is this the source of the confusion? If it's not, can you post an example?

In case it is... (and if it's not, just ignore the words below!)

    > categories contain galleries and optionally subcategories
    > subcategories contain galleries
    > galleries contain photos

A gallery must be assigned to a category, but a subcategory is optional.
On your site right now I see 6 categories, each containing a single gallery. It might seem less confusing if you gave the galleries names that didn't match the names of the categories. For example, instead of a Landscapes category containing a gallery called Landscapes, and a Waterscapes category containing a gallery called Waterscapes, you could try a Landscapes category containing a gallery named "Australia Landscapes" and a gallery named "Waterscapes".

There isn't a right and wrong here though. If you are planning to add more galleries to each of those categories, then leave them as single-gallery categories for now.

Sorry for the delay Denise and yes, you got it right. I find it somewhat confusing. As a newbie to the system it was hard to try and work out what I should and shouldn't be doing for each section, or whether I needed sub-sections. Your explanation helps.
