it's an eagle, probably 2 or 3-year old. the beak is just barely beginning to turn yellow, which occurs over a period of time between about 3 to 5 years of age. the white head and tail feathers come in around the 5th year.

Shucks. That means I am going to have to tell my boyfriend he is right. He said he thought it was a young bald eagle. I told him I thought it was a golden eagle. I didn't realize that young bald eagles were so dark.
He was actually sitting on a powerline on the side of the road and actually tolerated me getting out of the car and walking a little closer to get a different angle, which I was really surprised by. Most birds on the side of the road either fly away as soon as you stop the car, or the minute you open your door.
