Rodeo Bull Riding and Rodeo Bullfighters
These are from the 2011 Santa Maria Elks Rodeo, Santa Maria, California. A problem in photographing the big pro rodeos is that the action is immediately in front of a clutter of gates, fences, banners, and rodeo people. Officials limit roaming by photographers looking for a better angle.
1. Cool bull rider 1 in flight.
2. Cool bull rider 2--behind the headgear he's smiling.
3. The string of white bull mucus tracks the jump-and-twist of the bull under bull rider 3. These first three photos show some of the better rides, but, as the local newspaper reported, the bulls won the day overall, and kept the bullfighters (formerly called "rodeo clowns") busy rescuing bull riders. Bullfighter Aaron Hargo, in the bright shirt, moves into position to protect the rider after the bail out.
4. Right in harm's way: bullfighter Aaron Hargo distracts a charging bull away from a downed bull rider.
5. But the bull spins around and goes for the bullrider's buttocks. A second bullfighter, Donnie Castle (green shirt), gets in the bull's face.
6. Thanks to the two bullfighters, the bull spins again, and rider makes a successful break to safety.
7. Not every bull falls for the bullfighter's tactics. Here a bull charges the downed bull rider, while bullfighter Hargo sets up the distraction.
8. But the bull stays focused on the bull rider and leaps past the bullfighter.
9. And the bull runs down his rider, with the bullfighter in hot pursuit. A split second later the bullfighter got the bull off the bull rider.
10. In a calmer routine, bullfighter Hargo interposes himself between the bull rider and the threatening bull. After showing its stuff, the bull took the easy way out--back to the bull pen.
