What would you say is the best P&S out there for back country hikes?
1) The best IQ?
2) The best structure (waterproof... ect)
3) Value

Thanks!

Depends entirely on the features you require. Not many are waterproof, so if that is needed, the Olympus stylus tough series is best. But that's not the best p&s out there. Wide angle important? Or more zoom?

Okay so the olympus is the best by build. What about sheer IQ disregarding FL? I imagine I will be going for more wide angle though. Thanks!

Megapixels have almost nothing to do with image quality. Many current P&S cameras have more megapixels than most of my dSLRs, but my dSLRs produce much, much better image quality than any P&S that I am aware of.

Emancipator, I think if you can narrow down your own needs and specific requirements in a PNS (eg build quality, pocketability, print sizes you might need to make, wide-angle zoom, high ISO, good macro, built-in artistic effects etc etc) people can offer more specific suggestions to look at. There are SO MANY choices out there, that it's hard to offer general answers.

it ain't the number of pixels it's the size of the sensor.

The big whoop with micro 4/3 cameras is that they can deliver a sensor,
equal in size to many DSLRs.

12 mega pixels will get you to billboard size, no problem.

Of course this happens because you look at a billboard from a considerable distance.

Still, large prints from the current crop of Micro 4/3 cameras and P&S
cameras like Canon's 10 mp S95 are a non issue.

Blowing up prints from the 14 megapixel Canon SD 1400 IS... not so much.
