Brazil in my future?

Hi. I may have an opportunity to go on a photo journey in Brazil next year, primarily focused on horses, but also on scenery and culture.
Has anyone been there? Any comments, thoughts or suggestions? It would be a 10-day adventure, only some of it supervised/organized. I had heard that crime and theft was a real problem for camera gear. If I'm going on a course, obviously I would have my good cameras, lenses and computer with me.
I'd really appreciate any feedback you might have. Thanks.

The US State department has info about Brazil including safety issues for travelers on their site. http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1072.html
I had a teaching gig in Sao Paulo once the eventually fell through. The place I was supposed to go to had gotten as far as setting up some of the travel arrangements. They set up a car to pick me up at the airport. They were going to send me id info for the car and said I absolutely should not take a cab nor other car from the airport.
I remember it took quite a while to get a visa, I think over 4 or 5 weeks. I had to send my passport to the Brazilan consulate in, I think, New York. I talked to some of the people there on the phone, they were helpful but just overwhelmed.

Thanks. I'll check that out for sure. It's a very "iffy" thing at the moment anyway, depending on finances, but looks like quite an adventure.
