What happens to external links...

What happens to external links if I move a gallery from public to private? What I looking at is taking a bunch of older galleries off the public viewing portion of my site. But what if someone has a bookmark for a gallery or if the gallery is linked to from an external site... will the link/bookmarks still lead them to the now private gallery?
If so does anyone have a simple solution to my issue short of deleting the gallery... I do not wish folks to be able to access the galleries at all but I do not want to delete them completely... and there are a lot of them...

If they have it bookmarked, they'll still have access (easy for you to test this also, just log out or use a 2nd browser, Anthony).
Nothing will happen to your external links, they'll still function perfectly.

OK here's the other part of the equation:
I do not wish folks to be able to access the galleries at all but I do not want to delete them completely

It's more that I want them archived so no one can link to them. I guess that's not possible... OK I have a few ideas...

OK, how do I remove everything from this page, in regards to the password except the hint?

In this case then you'd want to turn external links off, no?

Tried that but it would not block it if someone has the exact URL, as in a bookmark.

I'm posting because of your use of the word "private" when talking about galleries. Please remember that there is no such thing as a "private" setting for Smugmug galleries. Smugmug has public, unlisted and password protected. Those are the three forms of access they offer. Unlisted works like an unlisted phone number. It's not out there for people to find and call, but if someone has the number, they can call it. That's the same for an unlisted gallery. It's not out there for people to just find and view, but if they have the URL, they can see it. The main thing taht unlisted does is remove it from your public display of galleries.

Besides the gallery listing, unlisted also removes a gallery from Smugmug's search indexes. Note, it may not remove it from Google's search indexes if Google has a way to know it exists (if it was previously public or if there is a link to the gallery on some other site that Google finds).

The only way to lock people out who previously had a link to the gallery is to add a password or to delete the gallery. In a further twist, adding a password will not even prevent someone from access an image that they previous had a direct link to. It will prevent them from viewing gallery pages, but not a single image (if they previously had a direct link to it).

Thanks for the input J. After a few minutes of playing around I had figured out exactly what you are referring to. So I played with the code and figured out you can use html in the "hint" for the gallery password. The result that I came up with is a passworded gallery w/o a way to enter a password... see this example:

I'm sure it can be cracked into if you pull out the web tools, but it serves the purpose I was looking for.

Would this work - how about creating a new gallery, then in the original gallery, use the "Move to Gallery" tool, move them all to the new gallery, then delete the original gallery. Set the new gallery to unlisted and password protected, and they shouldn't be able to find them. If you have a bunch of galleries, it's probably going to be a bit of work, but it may be a solution for you.

That works for getting rid of the old gallery URL. The image URLs don't actually change so any direct references to the images will survive being moved to a new gallery.

What if the galleries category name was changed? Does that change the URL of the pic?

Sort of, but not really. Smugmug puts the category in the URL for better SEO, but it isn't actually used for the serving of the image. So old image URLs will still work, even if you change the category. All of these work to display the same image (some with a redirect and some not):

Hey John, if you replace an image it still keeps the original image id doesn't it?

Yes, the URL stays that same when you do a replace.

Actually, I should amend my post to say that the core URL stays the same (same imageID), but Smugmug does change the version number in the URL when you do a replace to try to make it so that the new version is served up to people who have the old version in their browser cache. Smugmug is liberal about version numbers and will pretty much always give you an image no matter what version number you put in the URL. Having the right version number assures you that you won't get an old out-of-date version from the browser cache.
